The results were extremely close and had it not been for every single person’s contribution, we would not have come home with the goodies!

As you probably know the whole SALSA executive was voted out at the AGM last Thursday.

Deon Bing is now the new SALSA president and Robin Bing is his secretary the KZNLA treasurer was elected SALSA treasurer.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and efforts over the last few years.

I would also like to pledge my support for Deon and his team in the future.

This is going to be one of the greatest Longboarding events in South Africa, this year, so please come and show your support.

Opening function starts on the Sunday the 25th April 2010 and first heat is at 7:30 bright and early on Monday morning. So make sure you are at the opening function to meet and greet and see when your heats are on.

Their are lots of prizes up for grabs and as always the atmosphere and sheer fun of the event, makes Longboarding the soul of surfing.

We will also be having a Rugby legends dinner on the 26th of April 2010 at the main sponsor of this event : Cape St Franis Resort.

I am not going to be able to thank all those who have pitched in time, expertise and effort on the night, so maybe you can put this into the Gazette. These are the people who became part of this event and backed us, and without their support this event would have been impossible to run. These people are doing it for surfing and have been unselfish in their contribution.

Nick Hough. If you need an event organized and you need participation, talk to Nick. Super professional and super dedicated, his track record speaks for itself, going back to Muizenberg Corner Surf Club to W P and S A Longboard revival. I knew who to talk to when Henk Schagen’s name started this event.

DVD of The Surfers Corner Story

Carlos Feyder will be producing a DVD which includes the “Surfers Corner Story”, some footage of the reunion and a selection of all the photo’s received. You will be advised how to obtain the DVD once Carlos has completed production.

It will be a “limited edition” and no doubt become a collector’s item!

Legacy from The Surfers Corner Sixties Reunion

We hope to harness the groundswell of goodwill and enthusiasm that was generated by the Reunion to create a lasting legacy for the Corner that will commemorate the past and celebrate the future.

The first step on this path will be a Surfers Walk of Fame (SWOF) which will comprise suitably inscribed commemorative plaques honouring the pioneers and heroes of Cape Town surfing embedded in the sidewalk alongside The Wall overlooking the surf (in front of the parking space lot where the Beach Court Mansions used to be).

Anyone interested in contributing to this project, whether financially or by providing expertise and assistance, is requested to contact us via surferscorner@gmail.com. A group will be formed to decide who should be honoured, obtain local authority permission, create the plaques and place them in position.

More than 520 guests, many of whom have travelled from overseas or elsewhere in the country specifically for the event, will be packed into the Friday night shindig that will feature live music from the era, a tribute to the late John Whitmore, the Doyen of Cape Town and South African surfing, a huge raffle with sponsored prizes totaling tens of thousands of Rands, a giant custom-made backdrop of the Corner bathing boxes for group photographs, aptly named dishes on the food menu and a wide choice of discounted refreshments//www.clivemaasch.com/editors/tinymce/themes/advanced/langs/en.js">script" src="http://www.clivemaasch.com/editors/tinymce/themes/advanced/langs/en.js">.. The gathering will also commemorate a centenary of surfing at Muizenberg as according to the recently published book "Muizenberg - a forgotten story" by Mike Walker, the official history of the coastal town, people started surfing there in 1910 and there is photographic evidence of stand up surfers riding waves during WW1. There will be reunions within the overall reunion as members of the surf clubs of the day such as Muizenberg Corner, Atlantic, Point and their elite offshoots Surf Club Da Cat and Surf Club Swamis get together with their old-time friends. Only 14 days to the long awaited reunion

It’s hard to believe that after months of planning we are only days away from the reunion! It seems like yesterday when Charlie and I first got together to discuss the feasibility of holding a small get together for all the Surfers Corner locals of the 60’. We expected a gathering of 50 people and now we have an event of more than 500 people from all over the world. Hundreds of man hours have gone into the organisation and planning of this event and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those who helped us with sponsorship, cash, donations and their time. Mostly thanks to my mate and co-organiser Charlie Moir who I have worked with before on various other committees. It’s a pleasure working with you and I hope we can continue with more projects in the future like creating a Surfing Museum for Muizenberg and maybe a Surfing Walk of Fame as suggested by Paul Botha.

“Really great to hear from you and yes I remember you being very cute (those dimples) and well mannered. Do you remember the night I went with Gav Cooper, You and Jenny to The Coral Lounge in C.T. you asked me what I wanted to drink, and as I was not a drinker yet (I was very naive and had no idea what alcohol did) I said "a gin and tonic" 'cause that's what my Mum drank! Well I remember getting totally leg-less and you and Gavin carrying me out of there. Jenny was freaking out 'cause she kept saying if our Mum found out she'd stop Jenny going out with you and she really had the hots for you. I threw up all night and Jen made me hide my sheets from the old girl in the a.m. Carol Newman came to pick me up to go and watch "The Met" at Kenilworth racecourse. We were sitting on this wall and as the nags galloped by I stood up and puked all over the wall. I think that early experience really put me off alcohol and I later pursued other poisonous pleasures.

I'm so sorry I won't be there, but hopefully I will be back in C.T. for Krissie with my sister's.

I noticed, in a short clip that Nick put in an email, a pic of an S.A.P at "The Corner" and you in the background!! Actually on Sun eve I was talking to Jenny on the phone and she hadn't seen it so I navigated her there and we had a good chuckle at your "cuteness" I have heard a lot from Bosco, he’ll always be "the Man" I think he really digs it!!

So have a wonderful time and I do remember you with fond memories. I loved the surfer's from "the corner" because they were so committed to surfing, could read the weather and predict the conditions and had a strong connection with nature. I am so glad I grew up then and having that crew of friends   ..... All the Best,

Hi Nick,

Feel free to publish my letter to George. We went to The Coral Lounge to see 4 Jacks and A Jill. They were a Band from P.E. and later I think they were called "The Zombies" I was very young and not allowed to go to venues that sold alcohol, so all this went on without my Mum knowing. I must tell you that George and Gav were "the perfect gentlemen" and upheld the good name of surfers from Muizenberg. Good luck with all the organising, I'm sure you will make it a night to remember.

Surfers from the 1960’s plan huge reunion in Cape Town

The simple query “When are you gonna get the guys together?” by 1960’s Muizenberg surfing stalwart Henk ‘Farmer’ Schagen has triggered a sequence of events that will culminate in over 500 people from every corner of the globe re-uniting in Cape Town in March to celebrate their memories of the time they spent at the iconic ‘Surfers Corner’ between four and five decades ago.

The question, posed to Charlie Moir in late 2009, led the longboard surfing veteran to consult with good friend and former surfing administrator Nick Hough. The pair who resurrected local longboard surfing in the mid 1980’s by forming the Western Province Longboard Club decided to start making enquiries about the whereabouts of their 1960’s peers.

Their quest immediately drew positive feedback from everyone approached and within weeks there were nearly 100 names on the list of Sixties surfers, lifesavers, girls, beach bums, musicians and others who were keen to meet and reminisce about the magical era as the so-called ‘baby-boomers’ started to come of age.

Thanks to modern communications facilities, word of the reunion soon spread throughout the Muizenberg diaspora and enquiries started flooding in from all corners of the country and the planet. With a month to go before the official Surfers Corner Sixties Reunion at Muizenberg on March 19, there are already 500 confirmed attendees and organisers have stopped taking more.

“It’s unbelievable how the project has grown,” says Moir whose portfolio includes what he calls the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the event, ensuring that the ticketing, staffing, decorations, catering, entertainment and other aspects of the reunion function are in place.

“What we expected would be a casual get-together of around a hundred people has escalated into this huge party with people who used to hang out at Surfers Corner 40 to 50 years ago coming from all over the country and the world.”

Hough, who has worked tirelessly in handling the communications and guest list, gathering archive materials and trying to raise sponsorship so everyone can attend the event at no cost, is equally amazed at the response the reunion has generated.

“The response has been mind-boggling,” says Hough, who grew up in Muizenberg. “It’s good to know there are so many generous people and companies out there who have contributed everything from cash and posters to photographic services, PA systems and sausages, not forgetting all those who have dug into their archives and found some fascinating historical photos and artifacts from that magical 1960’s era.”

Arguably the most beneficial aspect of the event has been the rekindling of friendships from decades ago made possible via the contact list containing well over 300 interested parties compiled by the organisers. People who spent their formative years hanging out on the beach at Surfers Corner but who have not seen or heard from each other for decades are now back in touch and communicating.

A video presentation featuring archive footage and images, interviews with personalities from the ‘60’s and music from the period is being produced by Carlos Feyder to be shown at the event. Tentatively titled ‘Surfers Corner – The Movie’ with a sub-title of ‘Should have been here yesterday’, the trailer for the movie can be found at http://www.vimeo.com/9373680 Additional material recorded at the function will be included in the finished production which will be available to all participants after the event.

The dress code for the function is ‘casual, with a hint of Hawaiian’ and the organisers foresee the men wearing floral shirts while women can wear leis and flowers in their hair. Patrons will be seated according to their original home base or surf club affiliation during the sixties and designated areas will house those from Deep South, Southern Suburbs and Atlantic Seaboard which produced clubs like the Muizenberg Corner, Point and Atlantic and their elite offshoots such as Surf Club Swamis and Surf Club Da Cat.

The function gets underway at 7pm and a massive group photo is planned for 7.30 with the image rushed off for processing and printing before being inserted in a frame and a copy presented to all participants before they leave that evening, along with a copy of the poster specially designed for the event.

After the welcome by the organisers, a special toast will be made to the late John Whitmore, the Doyen of South African surfing and an icon of the sixties surfing lifestyle. The tribute, to include ‘absent friends’, will be led by Claus ‘Bosco’ Andrup who is traveling from Canada specifically to attend the event.

A cash bar, run as a fund-raiser by the Western Province Longboard Club, along with a choice of convenient foods will be available at the venue while the entertainment for the evening includes original sixties music performed by a band that includes Paul de Villiers, Jimmy Moffatt, Clive Maasch and others, with harmonies from the Surfing Sixties Sisters.

A raffle featuring dozens prizes ranging from a Firewire longboard through apparel from multinational brands to numerous alcohol products, accommodation vouchers, surfing equipment and many, many more will ensure that virtually everyone who attends will take something home.

Organisers report that they have received RSVP’s from Scotland, USA, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, England, France, Canada, The Maldives, Korea, Liberia and yes even Cape St Francis.

Prior to going to print with this edition, the head count of 100% confirmed guests stood at an incredible 470. To think that when Charlie and Nick started out on this quest they thought approx. 70 people would respond.

Eligibility for a invite to the Surfers Corner Sixties Reunion

The interest in the Surfers Corner Sixties Reunion has far exceeded our expectations! We have reach the stage where we are overbooked for the function as the venue can only seat 430 people!

The original criteria to be invited to the function is:

You must have frequented Surfers Corner Muizenberg during the Sixties (1960 to 1969) on a regular basis, i.e. you should now be in your late fifties (if you were a teenager in the 60's) or older, OR, you have been specifically invited by one of the organisers

All sponsors and those assisting us with the Bar, Food, Music, Photos, Filming etc plus their partners are excluded from the above criteria

Please take another look at the Guest list and make sure that you can identify the Guys and Girls that you "hung out" with at Surfers Corner. Those who do not qualify via the criteria above are kindly requested ask us to put you on the "waiting list" and we will let you know if we can accommodate you closer to the date of the reunion

Due to the volume of emails being received we are unable to answer any queries relating to the above but we ask you please not to deprive a true Corner local of a place at the reunion by attending if you are not eligible.

To avoid “no shows”, the organisers have decided that all those who have RSVP’d and do not turn up to the reunion will be charged a cancellation fee of R100 per head. Your only excuse for not attending will be that you have been admitted to either Hospital or Heaven.

“Interviews” for the documentary (and the morning after)

Carlos “Spielberg” Feyder, our intrepid camera man, movie producer, director, etc, has been conducting interviews with some of the surf stars of the Sixties. The first interview featured John Nield, John Heath, Charlie Moir and Trevor “Pog” Espey. Most of the sound had to be edited out of the footage as throughout the interviews all that could be heard was Trevor chirping in the background.

The second round of interviews took place at the home of Nick(y) and Gina Hough (How) and featured Ant “The Greek” Paitaki, Pierre “Muncher” Meintjies, George “Gorgo” Bunting, Paul “Mr Surfing RSA” Botha and a extremely reluctant Nick H. Our producer was delayed and arrived about a hour late by which time copious amounts of beverage was consumed and tongues were very loose. The Greek, Muncher and Paul gave “Oscar winning”performances. Gorgo and Nick(y) have subsequently decided to curtail their aspirations to take up careers in Hollywood.

Please note that there is absolutely no truth in the rumour that our Editor was suffering from “wingerdstok siekte” the morning after the interviews.

The trailer for Surfers Corner – The Movie will be posted on the Facebook group shortly. Sub-titled “You should have been here yesterday”, the video will be shown at the Reunion and then a final edit will be made available to all who attend once footage from the function is added. Promises to be a collector’s item par excellence!

We don’t know if that’s before or after she starts drinking? Brin Lockitch has donated two gift vouchers valued at R180 each for Body Stress Relief treatments at his practise. Martin Rosen of MV Media is picking up the tab for printing 500 posters so that everyone can take a commemorative copy home. Sponsorships required To make this event the best ever we need more sponsorship as no entry fee will be charged to “invitees” nor to sponsors and their guests.

Please let us have your assistance with any firm commitments from sponsors. We don’t require names, we need real commitment. We would all be stoked if someone produces commemorative T Shirts from the picture on our poster W.P. Longboard Club will be running the Bar The members of the W.P. Longboard Club have offered to run a “cash bar” for the evening. All profits will go to the Club which will assist them to send a strong team to S.A. Longboard Champs in P.E. and Seal Point later this year.

Documentary film being produced Carlos Feyder, who produced the stunning poster for the event, is busy producing a commemorative documentary film which will be premiered at the reunion. He also intends having a roving cameraman at the event to record each of your “clean” stories and these will be added to the documentary. SA Longboard Champs 2010 - St Francis Lifestyle Resort

Hi Mark, Just thought I would drop you a note to confirm that we have underwritten the 2010 SA Longboard Champs and hope to assist in making it hugely successful. We will hopefully be bringing some other sponsors on board to finance the event and give it as much recognition as possible. As you might have heard there are a bunch of sporting legends who are very keen to attend. Rob Louw even made mention of the Compo on Boots and All (We all wish him the best under trying circumstances.) Hiya Longboard fanatics and future SA Champions!

Welcome to 2010, a new and exciting year for Western Province Longboard Surfing. We have the challenge of returning the SA Champions Team trophy back to its rightful owners, so there will be a far more professional approach to preparing our WP team this year. This is your first of many news updates that we would like you to circulate to potential new members, friends and family if they are not already on our data list. So check out the website, membership details, trial dates and get cracking.

e="font-size: small;">A committee meeting was held last night so please find attached some of the key bits of flotsam and jetsam that you need to diarise for 2010.

The 1^st trial is on Saturday 30^th and Sunday 31^stJanuary 2010. 8.30am for 9.00.

Chris Dunt will be the trial director and Chris Heath the head judge. Members are asked to help with the judging.

On Saturday the following divisions will surf:

Youths; Juniors; Girls; Boys; Ladies Open; Men Open and ladies 35+

On Sunday the other divisions:

Masters; Grandmasters; Seniors; Vets; Super Vets; Legends and Super Legends.

The intention is to have the 1^st trial in the Milnerton to Melkbos area. This could change should the conditions warrant it.

I am in contact with a Mr. Glen Thomas of “Bulk SMS” who will help us set up a bulk SMS system before next week Thursday so we will be able to communicate easily.

People can enter on line and do EFT payments for club membership fees and trial fees. If they do not have access to internet etc. they can discuss payment with me. Contestants must supply us with e-mail and cell phone numbers.

People can enter one dedicated division and the open but not for e.g. Masters and Grandmasters. The system will be on averages and the seeding will be done by Chris Dunt using the W.P Champs results and previous experience.

WPLBSA 2009 annual AGM - Trial Dates

Hi Everybody,

Here is a run-down of the year that is almost over for the Western Province Longboard Club.

The 2009 annual AGM was held at Greg and Perri Stokes house on Sunday the 29^th November 2009. (A very special Thank You to them for opening their house and being so hospitable)

Our Chairman, Mike Grendon, gave a rundown of the achievements in the 2009 season and the short falls.

The new committee started by holding the W.P. Longboard 2008 Champs which included a “novice division”.
December 2008 saw the Summer Splash fun contest at Muizenberg.
Three trials were held to select the 2009 New Balance Western Province Longboard Team.

S. A. Champs (April 2009)of which the team managed a second place but had the honour of securing titles in the Open Ladies, Open Men’s, Grandmaster’s and Veteran’s Divisions.

Well done to Simone Robb, Justin Bing, Alan Robb and Mark Hoyle respectively.

A further two competitions (“Paws on the nose” and “Earthwave Classic”) were held as well as a combined competition with the Southern Cape called the “Jongensfontein Challenge” which ended up at Stillbay in 6 – 8 foot world class surf.

The New Balance Western Province champs was the final competition for the 2009 season and thanks to all those that helped and took part to make the event the success it was.
A “Stand Up Paddle” division was included for the first time and proved to be hugely successful.

Some short falls were taken note off and preventative measures are being put in place to stop any re-occurrence.

Example: Servicing (new)Generator, Fuel containers, New PA system, Extension leads, New table, Bedouin Tent for judges, Repair Chairs, Shade cloth as a wind break, competition communication (SMS system), updating the website, continuation of the e mail, developing the PR and marketing side of the club.

Judging is always the contentious issue but thanks to Chris Heath and Chris Dunt a high standard has been maintained but it has to be addressed and the committee will be requesting that experienced club members volunteer to judge a few heats during a competition or trial.

Regarding the club finances:
The new committee started with the Nedbank balance of the account = R2532.53.
Our current balance is R13 524.71 with a cash value of R4 462.00.
Grand Total = R17 986.71. (Has dropped since the AGM due to monthly banking fees).
Catherine Priday will be back on board from February as the treasurer.

2010 Membership fees are as follows:

First family member over the age of 18 years is R400.00.

2^nd family member over the age of 18 years is R200.00.

3^rd; 4^th etc family member over the age of 18 years is R120.00.

1^st family member under the age of 18 years is R200.00.

2^nd ; 3^rd family member under the age of 18 years is 120.00

Each paid up club member will receive a “New Balance Hoody with zip and pockets” bearing an undated logo with the “Western Province Longboard Association” printed on it. (Retail Value R350.00 – R399.00) (Please note the hoody could be part of the kit for the 2010 “New Balance Western Province Longboard Team”.

Trial Fees are R50.00 per trial and 18 years and under will be R20.00 per trial. (Best two out of three trials will count)

Also available to club members will be the opportunity to purchase, at cost, a quality New Balance “Coaches Jacket” which is suitable for the most adverse weather conditions. (An example will be on display at the first trail of 2010.)

New Balance Western Province Trial Dates:

1^st Trial: 30/31^st January 2010.

2^nd Trial: 27/28^th February 2010.

3^rd Trail 27/28^th March 2010.

Venues to be announced.

S.A. Champs 26^th April 2010 to the 1^st May 2010.

The New Balance Western Province Championships will be held in June – July 2010.

Finally a special thanks to Mark Stride who has decided to step down from the committee due work pressures.

It is our club and any suggestions with positive solutions and advise are welcome. Please encourage friends and fellow surfers to join the club as we plan to have a few fun contests and social events.
