Lunatic Surfer or Destiny?
A book about the life and times of Donald Paarman, eldest of the renowned Cape Town surfing clan and arguably the best surfer to come out of South Africa in the 1960’s. Sub-titled ‘Autobiography of a Springbok…whaaat!’, the story chronicles his upbringing in a close-knit Catholic family, his introduction to surfing and selection for the Springbok surfing teams of 1966, ’68 and ’70, offering a fascinating glimpse of the surfing and hippie cultures that exist both in South Africa and internationally.
In his own inimitable way he lays bare his descent into drugs, alcoholism and lunacy on numerous occasions. His resurrection through surfing, therapy and abstinence to become a healthy and surf-stoked 56 year-old, who is still seeking the meaning of life, is an inspiration to all and provides a timeless attraction for anyone interested in alternative.
‘More than been there… and back... embroidered the T-shirt... wrote the book – Donald’s done enough living for the both of us. Soft cover, hard core...’ Deon Bing
‘Donald has a voice that goes into forceful detail, grippingly describing hard times and drifting into amazement at what is going on around him.’ Craig Jarvis
‘A riveting read about the highs and lows of an unconventional lifestyle as seen through the eyes of a ‘60’s surfing icon and recovering extremist.’ Paul Botha
